Davaoena martial artist Sydney Sy Tancontian has won the bronze medal in the World Sambo Championships held in Novi Sad, Serbia this year.

The Filipino athlete placed third in the seniors 80-kilogram division of the World Sambo Championship organized by the International SAMBO Federation (FIAS) and held from November 5 to 8, 2020, by beating Spain’s Evadne Huecas in a 2-1 victory. Russian bet Olga Artoshina and Ukraine’s Vasylyna Kyrychenko claimed the top rankings.

The 2020 World Sambo Championship for Youth, Junior and Seniors Men and Women took place at the multi-purpose SPENS arena in Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia with stringent health and social distancing protocols amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Sambo is a Soviet martial art and combat sport on the rise in the Philippines. Sydney was coached by her father, Paolo Tancontian, the secretary-general for the Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. (PSFI).

Sydney Sy Tancontian has already clinched a bronze medal in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2019 women’s kurash event and bagged a historic win for the Philippines during the 2018 World Sambo Championships in Romania by becoming the first South East Asian athlete to claim a bronze medal in the competition.
