Musicians of Filipino descent are among the nominees for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards set to take place in January 2021.
Five Filipino-American music artists were among the names announced by America’s Recording Academy as it revealed its Complete Nominees List for the 2021 Grammys on November 24, 2020.
H.E.R.
Award-winning musician H.E.R. is nominated for three Grammys which include “Song Of The Year” for her powerful hit ‘I Can’t Breathe’, “Best R&B Song” for ‘Better Than I Imagine’, and ‘Slow Down’ with Jamaican singer Skip Marley.
H.E.R., whose real name is Gabriella Wilson, was born to an African-American father and a Filipina mother. The music artist debuted at the 61st Grammys in 2019 with two golden gramophones out of 5 nominations even without releasing her debut album. Wilson again enjoyed five nominations at the 62nd Grammy Awards in 2020.

Christine Allado
Filipino-British actress and singer Christine Allado received the Grammy nomination “Best Musical Theater Album” for ‘The Prince of Egypt’. Allado starred as Tzipporah, Moses’ wife, in the West End staging for ‘The Prince of Egypt’ from three-time Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz.
“Who knows what miracles you can achieve?” So ridiculously thrilled to be #GRAMMY nominated for the @princeofegyptuk album!! Actually pinch me cuz this is craaaazyyy!!” Christine Allado wrote in an Instagram post.
Robert Lopez and wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez
Filipino-American composer Robert “Bobby” Lopez, best known for co-writing songs featured in the Disney animated films “Frozen” and “Coco” with wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, has been nominated for the “Frozen” sequel’s soundtrack ‘Into the Unknown’ performed by Idina Menzel featuring Aurora.
“We were so surprised and excited when we heard! There are no nominations without the incredible directors, crew, artists and engineers at @Disneyanimation. We are so grateful to the thousands of people that helped make this possible,” Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote on Twitter.
The “Frozen II” soundtrack featured seven songs composed by the songwriting couple.
Brian Keith Warfield
Jhené Aiko’s “Chilombo” album received a string of nominations including “Album of the Year”, Best Progressive R&B Album”, and “Best R&B Performance” for the song” ‘Lightning & Thunder’. R&B producer Brian Keith Warfield of Filipino and African-American descent was part of the team who worked on the album.
“3 Grammy nominations and one of them being ALBUM OF THE YEAR! Wow, shout out to the whole team! We worked so hard on this album so I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Now if we can just bring this trophy home!” Warfield said.
Toro y Moi
‘The Difference’ by Australian electronic musician Flume and featuring Black-Filipino artist Chaz Bear, known professionally as Toro y Moi, has been nominated for “Best Dance Recording”. The collaboration is the first between the two artists.
The Recording Academy’s prestigious awards night for 83 categories will be hosted by “The Daily Show” host and GRAMMY-nominated comedian Trevor Noah and is set to be broadcast live from Los Angeles on January 31, 2021.
