The newly restored Barasoain Church has finally been turned over to Bulacan parishioners by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
The NHCP announced to the public the formal turn over of the historical church via social media on September 15 to mark the 122nd anniversary of the Malolos Congress.
The Bulacan’s heritage church formerly known as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish as well as the adjoining convent had undergone restoration for 390 days with a budget of Php19.3 million under the supervision of the Historic Preservation Division of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
The Bulacan provincial government led the turnover ceremony in a low-key manner because of the ongoing coronavirus disease pandemic.
Built in 1888, the predominantly Baroque Church is one of the significant landmarks in the Philippine history as it served as a venue for the Filipino compatriots to write and enact the Malolos Constitutions, that eventually gave birth to the First Philippine Republic and later known as the first republic in Asia.
The image of the church’s facade had been imprinted in the Philippine ten-peso note from 1985 to 2002.
Other century-old churches in different parts of the country had also undergone restoration.
In July this year, the 137-year-old San Salvador del Mundo Parish Church located in Caraga, Davao Oriental, the largest Catholic Church in Mindanao, finally opened after closing its doors in 2018 to give way to the restoration project.
Centuries-old San Agustin Church inside the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila underwent restorative cleanup with German technology for free in November of 2019.
Ilocos Norte’s 209-year old St. Anne Parish church in Piddig built by Agustinian friars in 1810 also reopened after almost five years since it closed its doors from 2014 to 2019 for restoration.
