Team Philippines bagged 1 gold and 2 bronze medals and three honorable mentions in the 61st International Math Olympiad (IMO) held Monday.
The 6-member team of Filipino students who represented the country in the 1st math olympiad held online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, finished strong and all of them landed with awards in the most prominent math competition held from September 19-28, 2020.
The Philippines’ IMO representatives competed among 616 students from 105 national teams that participated in the online tournament.
Andres Rico Gonzales III from De La Salle University Integrated School, who won a bronze medal last year and an honorable mention in 2018, brought the gold this year, making him the 4th gold medalist in the country.
Gonzales III, joins Philippines’ IMO gold medalists Farrell Eldrian Wu and Kyle Patrick Dulay who won in 2016, and Albert John Patupat in 2018.
IMO-first timer Raphael Dylan Dalida won a bronze medal while Bryce Ainsley Sanchez clinched a repeat of his bronze finish in 2019.
The winning 2020 math geniuses from the Philippines have already brought 6 medals from last year’s IMO held in the United Kingdom.
The Philippine team was led by Team Leader Christian Paul Chan Shio, and Deputy Team Leader Carlo Francisco Adajar, both were former IMO representatives of the country.

- GOLD MEDAL – Andres Rico GONZALES III of De La Salle University Integrated Schoo
- BRONZE MEDAL – Raphael Dylan DALIDA of Philippine Science High School – Main Campu
- BRONZE MEDAL – Bryce Ainsley SANCHEZ of Grace Christian College
- HONORABLE MENTION – Immanuel Josiah BALETE of St. Stephen’s High School
- HONORABLE MENTION -Sarji Elijah BONA of Palawan Hope Christian School / De La Salle University Integrated School
- HONORABLE MENTION -Vincent DELA CRUZ of Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science
Filipino students have shown dominance in various mathematics international olympiads.
In 2019, Pinoy mathematics students scored 23 awards at the 13th Asian Finals of the World Math-Fusion Olympiad held in Kuala Lumpur.
Filipino math wizards bagged 95 gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 5th Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) also last year.
