Filipino actor Dingdong Dantes has just raised the country’s flag on South Korean soil after winning the Asian Star Prize while his TV series “Descendants of the Sun PH” won at the 15th Seoul International Drama Awards.
Dantes and DOTS PH were named winners in the awarding ceremony that went live via MBC TV and online on YouTube due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Asian Star Prize
In a recorded video uploaded on the Seoul International Drama Awards YouTube channel on September 15, 2020, the GMA Kapuso Primetime King expressed his gratitude for the international recognition he received for playing the role of Captain Lucas Manalo a.k.a. Big Boss in the local adaptation of the Korean hit drama series, Descendants of the Sun.
“I knew that I have big shoes to fill when I play the role of Big Boss in Descendants of the Sun Philippine adaptation,” the award-winning Filipino actor said. “The story was very well-loved by Filipinos, including my wife (actress Marian Rivera) who is an avid fan of K-Drama.
“That’s why reliving the story is both an opportunity and a responsibility,” he continued. “We had the chance to retell a well-loved world-class creation while honoring the lives and experiences of our modern-day heroes through our portrayals. With this, I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Seoul International Drama Awards,” shared Dantes.
The 40-year-old actor and navy-reservist also dedicated his award to all his co-workers in the show, to all the COVID-19 frontliners from different parts of the world, to his family, and kababayans.
“I share this award to all the men and women who work tirelessly to make the show alive in the hearts of our viewers.
“This award is also a tribute to all frontliners of the world. Soldiers, healthcare workers, and volunteers.
“This award is also for my loved ones and the Filipino people. May we find consolation knowing that our stories are being appreciated especially during these trying times.
“Again thank you very much. This is Dingdong Dantes from GMA7. A snappy salute to you all. Maraming salamat,” Dingdong concluded.
With his new accolade from South Korea, Dingdong duplicated the feat of his fellow Kapuso actors Alden Richards and Dennis Trillo who won the same award in 2019 and in 2016, respectively.
Most Popular Foreign Drama
GMA Network’s Descendants of the Sun Philippine adaptation bagged “The Most Popular Foreign Drama of the Year” award.
Actress Jennylyn Mercado, who plays the lead character of Dr. Maxine Dela Cruz opposite Big Boss, Dantes, Rocco Nacino, and other cast members, as well as the series’ production team members, accepted the award for the series through recorded video messages.
