The City of Davao was officially named the Cacao Capital of the Philippines for its booming chocolate industry which is responsible for producing the most cacao beans in the entire Davao region.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) says the region produced a whopping total of 2,289.74 metric tons of cacao from the years 2015-2019.
The combined production efforts of the provinces: Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental helped the region reach 5,960.23 MT or 70.21 percent of the nation’s total output in 2019.
The DA also says Davao’s cacao beans are now one of the most sought-after by chocolate makers around the world.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte thanked the city’s cacao industry players for the agriculture award she received in a virtual event from DA Secretary William Dar on September 7, 2020.
“While it is one thing for our cacao and chocolates to be renowned internationally, to be recognized by the national government is just as important for us, for this is an affirmation and a celebration of the efforts of our cacao farmers and processors, and everyone in the cacao industry,” she said in her acceptance message.
World-famous Auro Chocolate from Davao’s farms had made history for its first-ever Philippine export to European markets including Belgium, the chocolate capital of Europe, and the world.
The local brand also nabbed four World Awards from the International Chocolate Awards (ICA) held in Guatemala.
Auro cacao farmer Jose Saguban was also awarded at the Paris International Cocoa Awards.
