The Manila Bay mangrove rehabilitation has received support from the joint efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Foundation.
DENR and SMC Foundation started planting 1,000 propagules Bakauan babae scientific Rhizophora mucronata on July 29, 2020, in the 10-hectare coastal area of Tibaguin village along Manila Bay located in the Municipality of Hagonoy, Bulacan.
The project aims to protect the coastal and inland communities and to address the frequent flooding in the province of Bulacan.
Mangroves are known to be natural defense from high tide and storm surge, prevent coastal erosion, siltation and flooding, and home to wildlife species and marine life.
DENR is providing all the technical assistance while SMC Foundation shoulders the necessary funding and planting materials.
“This was a collaborative undertaking of the public and private sector to sustain and protect our mangrove areas and the lives of communities in these coastal areas of Bulacan from disaster,” said Arthur Salazar, the Deputy Director for Technical Services of the DENR.
Elmer Bohol, the representative of SMC Foundation said that the initial 1000 propagules planted were just part of the total 190,000 mangrove propagules target to be planted until December 2020 in more than 76-hectare coastal areas in Central Luzon.
In September last year, the Toyota Motor Philippines and volunteers from different coastal areas of the Philippines simultaneously planted 40,000 mangrove seedlings.
The Iloilo City government launched its Bamboo Planting Program in June 2020 to help boost the air quality in the city. The Iloilo Provincial government followed suit through its Tanum Iloilo tree planting program that aims to grow 1.5 million native and fruit-bearing trees to fight climate change.
