De La Salle Zobel standout Bien Quirimit was declared the Jr. National Basketball Association (NBA) Global Champion in its first-ever virtual skills tournament.
Quirimit, who hails from Bacoor, Cavite, is one of nine De la Salle Zobel students who represented the Asia-Pacific in the youth basketball tournament for top athletes over 13-14 years of age. held online on August 11, 2020.
The Filipino champion bested competitors in this year’s international competition that took place on a virtual platform called HomeCourt, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered application that hosts a variety of interactive drills and virtual competitions curated by NBA.
Competitors vied for the crown by gaining as much points as they could while completing the app’s built-in screen obstacles.
The Filipino teen showcased his lightning-fast reflexes in the virtual showdown against Mid Atlantic challenger, Este Frankie.
Quirimit was hailed 2020’s global Jr. NBA champion after he achieved a staggering 844 points in the online challenge.
Over 3,000 young hopefuls from international regions (Asia-Pacific, Africa, India, Latin America, Mexico, Canada, China, Europe and Middle East) and US regions (Mid-Atlantic, Central, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, South and Southeast, West) participated prior to the Global Championship.
The tournament was originally set to transpire in Orlando, Florida. The championship took to virtual application HomeCourt instead to safeguard the health of young athletes from around the world.
Quirimit along with fellow teen athletes are already eyeing the next virtual tournament, which is the Gatorade Jr. NBA Global Skills Challenge. Coach Michael Casimiro says their team members keep in tip-top shape by making use of the HomeCourt app regularly for online varsity trainings.
