- Authorities conducted an operation to rescue street dwellers in Manila.
Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno urged motorists and Good Samaritans not to give alms to those beggars who are already living on the road.
Even though the people who give alms have good intentions, the mayor said that most street dwellers who are seen begging use their money for bad things.
Yorme said this after a two-night operation conducted by the joint Manila Police District (MPD) under P / Gen. Rolando Miranda and the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) led by Re Fugoso, to rescue the homeless.
Most of the 700 rescued street dwellers, if not drunk, are in possession of a banned substance. Although they are not caught in the illegal activity, the operatives obtain paraphernalia.
He said, the giver means well but it does not bring good results in the long run. The alms only gives beggars the chance to buy the wrong things.
He urged the public to give the money to the local government instead of giving it to the beggars.
“Let me guide you. Take it to the Manila government and we will make sure that your generosity is available to those in real need. Sometimes, your kindness is exploited and it is not good for them,” the mayor said.
According to Mayor Isko, when the community quarantine is implemented, they immediately take the street dwellers to safety, but many of them flee and return to the streets.
