Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) prohibits speaking inside Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) trains to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The LRMC advisory states: “Passenger reminder: Talking is not allowed on the train. Respiratory droplets are one of the common causes of the spread of COVID-19. Do not talk to the next passenger inside the LRT-1. Make it a habit to wear a face mask and use alcohol or sanitizer. ”
In a televised interview with LRMC Corporate Communications head Jacqueline Gorospe, she said they observed that passengers remove their face masks while inside the LRT-1 trains, especially when answering cell phone calls. “Knowing COVID-19, it is transmitted through droplets, another layer of protection is if no one speaks, no droplets will appear. We remind our passengers that we need to postpone the call first. Or if they need to talk, they need to wear a mask,” said Gorospe.
To ensure that the speech ban is enforced while inside the LRT-1 trains, some marshals and LRT personnel will tour inside the trains.
Gorospe also revealed that eight of their staff have been infected with COVID-19 in recent months. They were immediately taken to the isolation facility when the test results were positive.
Three of the staff are in good condition and are just finishing their 14-day quarantine.
